McNeese State had 92 student-athletes named to the Southland Conference commissioner's spring academic honor roll the league office announced on Thursday.

More than 950 student-athletes from all members of the conference were named to the list.

McNeese's total of 92 was second high, Texas State leading with 102 honorees.

The total of 953 student-athletes named to the spring honor roll surpassed the record of 932 set last spring. This year's list boasts 12 student-athletes of the year, four players of the year and a total of 143 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester. The honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.

McNeese State's 92 selections to the commissioner's list included 15 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. A total of 14 men's and women's basketball players earned a spot on the honor roll after leading the school to a sweep of the men's and women's regular-season titles, a first in the history of the Southland. Eight women's players, including Ashlyn Baggett, the most valuable player of the women's tournament, and six men's players, including all-conference selections Diego Kapelan and P.J. Alawoya, earned mention. Baggett, who was the women's basketball student-athlete of the year, earned a 3.66 GPA in nursing and also was the McNeese State Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Baseball junior Jace Peterson was the McNeese State Male Scholar Athlete of the Year after posting a 3.81 GPA in general studies. He was also the Southland's top pick in the MLB Draft earlier this month, going 58th overall to the San Diego Padres.

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.

The McNeese track and field team led the school with 28 selections, 16 women and 12 men, while baseball had 15, softball 14, women's basketball and women's golf eight each, tennis seven and men's basketball and men's golf six each.

Jonesboro, AR - Second place efforts by Joshua Sawe, Jacqueline Berry and Mariah Georgetown and the men's 4x400 meter relay team as well as a school record by Georgetown highlighted McNeese State's performance during the Arkansas State Christmas indoor track and field meet here Saturday.

The meet opened the indoor season for the Cowboys and the Cowgirls and will be the only one until after the first of the new year for them.

Sawe posted an 8:34.99 effort for his runnerup finish in the men's 3000 meter run and he was only defeated by Aaron Batey who was running unattached and produced an 8:33.67 finish.

Berry placed second in the women's triple jump with a leap of 37-9 ½ while Georgetown was second in the 55 meter hurdles with a school record effort of 8.17, that mark breaking the old standard of 8.45 that had been run by Antwanette Reece in 2001.

The Cowboy relay team of Charles Jackson, Michael Washington, Cody Skarupa and Torian Lindsey ran 3:22.85 for its second place finish.

Coming up with third place efforts in the meet were Parminder Singh in the men's high jump (6-6 ¾) and Amy Guinn in the women's 3000 meter run (10:17.72) while fourth places were won by Skarupa in the 800 meters (1:5839), Ronald Stine in the men's 200 meters (22.29), Jarrett LeBlanc in the men's 3000 meters (8:43.75), Jasmine Cornelius in the women's high jump (5-3) and the women's 4x400 meter relay team of Ashleigh Wells, Desarae Couthren, Jasmine Cornelius and Georgetown (4:03.64)

McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy said that he thought his team's performance was a good one in its first meet of the year.

"As you can see we scored points in almost all of the events leading to what should be well rounded performances for us in all of our meets this year."

JUNE 22, 2010 - Track & Field

McNeese State recently kicked off its track and field recruiting season with the signing of two for the Cowboy team and seven for the Cowgirls.

Head coach Brendon Gilroy made the announcement of the signees, adding "This class of women should help add depth to our young sprint and jumping corps for the coming season. We identified an area we needed to get more competitive in and we feel that this group will come in ready to go. They all had success at their last stop.

"I expect the two men we signed to also make a significant contribution to our Cowboy team this year."

New Cowboys on the squad will be hurdler/middle distance runner Cody Skarupa from Collegiate High School in Destin, FL and jumper Xavier Stevens from Acadiana High.

Joining the Cowgirls will be sprinter/jumper Mariah Georgetown of Bethany Christian of Baton Rouge, jumper/sprinter Jasmine Cornelius of Elgin (TX) HS, hurdler/jumper/sprinter Desarae Couthren of Elgin HS, hurdler/sprinter Emily Spence of Sterlington (LA) HS, jumper/sprinter Courtnei Carter of St. Louis HS, jumper/sprinter Cassie Cubbison of Lorena (TX) HS and distance runner Georgia Ball of William Farr HS in the United Kingdom.

Skarupa was a champion in the 800 meters during McNeese's own Cowboy Relays last indoor season and he went on to post a best of 1:55 in the event. However, his best event could be the long hurdles as he is presently the 11th ranked high school hurdler in the nation with a top effort of 53.6 in the 400 hurdles.

He won district and regional titles in the 300 hurdles during the year and finished fifth in the state meet.

Stevens was the state Class AAAAA runnerup in the triple jump event this past season with a best of 47-8.
